1999–2000 Recipient

Adele A. Bailar

Community College of Aurora

“During my academic career I have had several-opportunities to apply quality and measurement concepts. Measurements were used in experiments in chemistry and physics where several simples were taken and calculations were made for the mean, mode and median. In the class on statistics we covered probability, frequencies, permutations and the effects of each. 1 also have taken a Tests and Measurements class which centered around conducting all types of physical-fitness tests. Class members would participate in the tests. We would then calculate the mode, mean, median and standard deviation for the group.

“While my career has not been in the manufacturing field, quality is still a major consideration where building upkeep and equipment maintenance are concerned. Checklists are used in the rooms preventative-maintenance program as well as punch lists for renovation projects. Both are definitely related to quality of product. Checklists on equipment are used which require not-only visual inspection but amping out motors to see if they are within design specs. Adjustments or repairs can then be made to correct any deficiencies. I have been working in the Hotel industry for seventeen years, most of that time in Management. I am currently seeking a change of careers. I was introduced to the Metrology field through a counselor at the Community College of Aurora. 1t encompasses a number of things that I have always had an interest in. Those would,be math, attention to detail, documentation and hands-on type of work. It is my sincere desire to enter into the field of Metrology. I believe that I have a lot to contribute.”

Since her graduation from Aurora, Ms. Bailar has received a B.S. in medical technology (with distinction) from the University of Nebraska.
